“That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.”
Psalm 26:7 [KJV]
Nigel's Testimony
In my teenage years, I would often go out to a vacant paddock near my house to ponder the meaning of life. My family was not religious, but my mother had taught me a bedtime prayer as a child, and I would look at the night sky and wonder if there was a God. I had no answers to the meaning of life, nor did I have any answer to my quick temper, which repeatedly caused significant issues.
I regarded the Christian faith as unscientific superstition and its followers as weaklings. I continued to think this way until my early twenties. My friend Mark had been raised Catholic but became a born-again Christian during our years together at University. While I often debated religion with him, I was more interested in drinking, socialising and outdoor adventure.
I was an angry man and Mark sensed it, so he offered me a book on Christian evidences called, More than a Carpenter. You beauty, I thought, now I can find out what Christians believe and use it against them. However, as I read through the book, I came to a crisis point in my life. Either Jesus was Lord and God, or he was a liar or lunatic. The book quoted 1 John 5:13 which states, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God”. How could anyone be so sure that you can have eternal life?
I opened the Bible given to me by my friend and read the book of Matthew in one sitting. I could not remember a thing, but it was fantastic. It was the first time I had ever read the Bible. When I told Mark I believed Jesus was God, he almost did a cartwheel, and I agreed to go to church with him. At church, I heard the Gospel presented from John 3:7, “Ye must be born again”.
The next evening, I was working late at the University. A deep sense of conviction came over me. I acknowledged that I was a sinner and needed Jesus Christ to be my Lord and my Saviour. I invited the Lord to come into my life and take control. When I rose from my knees and walked through that darkened building, the Lord’s presence was with me. The Bible says in Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
From that time of confessing Christ, I have never doubted the Bible to be God’s inspired Word and that I had received eternal life. God did a wonderful work in my life and gave me a new power to deal with my anger. I now also have a clear purpose in life: to love God, to serve Him with all my heart and to help others know Him.
Call to ministry
My desire to be involved in Christian ministry came soon after my conversion, and I progressively became involved in church activities and discipling others. In 1983, the Lord spoke to me from Jeremiah 1 and I sensed the call to preach as “a prophet to the nations”. My first sermon was preached four years later, and I have preached hundreds of times since then.
However, the call for me to focus more on apologetics and creation science only came six years ago. I heard of a creation science organisation seeking a qualified young man to join their team but thought no more of it until the organisation’s director shared at the church I attended. God spoke to me, and I knew I had to speak to the man. We had a good chat – and a laugh. I met their qualifications except the ‘young man’ aspect: I was in my early sixties. Later, I spent two valuable weeks learning from Creation Research speaker John Mackay as I took him around various parts of South Australia to fulfill his commitments at church meetings, Christian schools, a field trip and on a successful trilobite fossil hunt.
Around this time the Lord laid Hebrews 11:8 on my heart, “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” I wasn’t sure where the Lord was leading yet, but I knew I had to obey. Firstly, the Lord led myself, my wife and those of our family still at home to uproot from the church where we had been for forty years and move to Northside Baptist Church. Secondly, through Northside and my own studies, I became convinced of the importance of ecclesiastical separation, and that God’s primary vehicle for ministry is the local church rather than para-church organisations. Thirdly, the Pastor at Northside revealed the church had been praying for someone in the creation science sphere. God used these aspects to confirm that His will was for me to minister in creation science as part of the local church.
With Pastor Simeon’s support, the ministry I have been called to has a three-fold purpose with a special (but not exclusive) emphasis on Biblical science:
1. To support the ministry of Northside Baptist Church to teach the whole counsel of God.
2. To support the ministry of like-faith, doctrinally compatible independent Baptist/Bible Churches.
3. To provide resources to the broader community largely via a website.
Pastoral recommendation
Pastor Simeon Western - Northside Baptist Church SA
"I prayed some time ago that the Lord might provide us a man with qualifications in the science space who could minister in the area of apologetics. The Lord answered that prayer and led Bro. Nigel Currie to our church at the end of 2020. He has been a fundamental, Independent Baptist all of his Christian life and is a member of our church, in full agreement with our doctrinal position and standards.
Nigel has qualifications in Education (Grad DipEd) and Science with BSc (majoring in Chemistry and Geology), and BSc (Hons) and PhD in Chemistry. He has worked as a Chemical Scientist for 4 years, within Quality and Environmental Management for 14 years and as a High School teacher for 20 years. Most importantly, while not a pastor, Brother Currie is an experienced preacher/teacher of the Word. He and his wife are encouragers of the saints and I am sure you and your church would find them a blessing."
May I suggest some ways brother Nigel might be a blessing to your church.
➢ Conferences or special meetings on Creation Science and apologetic themes
➢ Church camps (e.g., Youth Camps, Family Camps).
➢ Homeschool groups and Christian schools.
➢ Pulpit supply and general preaching needs.
➢ Zoom sessions (e.g., virtual conference, special session, overseas churches)."
